Including letter, 8 Sept. 1828, Columbia, S.C., to James Y. Jones, Palmers Springs, Va., re notice of new trial, enclosed with letter, 25 Sept. 1828, James Y. Jones to Robert Leckie, Washington, [D.C.], calling attention to letter and his poor health; letter, 31 Jan. 1829, Columbia, S.C., to John M. DeSaussure, Camden, S.C., re death of [Henry G.] Nixon in a duel and public sentiment regarding the incident and the practice of dueling. Collection also includes facsimile of battle map from Mexican War, 26 Apr. 1847, drawn by "J.D.B architect," depicting rugged topography in vicinity of Tower Hill and Bluff River, Mexico, identifying breastworks, four Mexican forts, and U.S. troop movements; includes description of military maneuvers, noting sites where "Tennessee Reg[imen]t ... was cut to pieces- & [Gideon Johnson] Pillow wounded & Pennsylvanians flinched"; and noting that "Santa Anna was at a hill some 3 miles up the road ... [General Winfield] Scott was at Plan del Rio." Also including letter, 21 May 1848, Columbia, S.C., to Robert Bradford, Sumterville, S.C., re legal actions undertaken by DeSaussure against estate of I. Pitts to recover a debt; and letter, 26 Sept. 1853, Columbia, S.C., To his Excellency the President of the United States [Franklin Pierce], recommending Edward J. Means for post of Purser in the Navy. Other papers document DeSaussure's connection with S.C. College, including letter, 3 Apr. 1856, Columbia, S.C., to Dr. R[obert] W[ilson] Gibbes, invitation to meet a kinsman from Geneva; letter, 24 July 1867, to Prof. John LeConte, official notice authorizing him to deliver lectures on "Botany and Materia Medica in the Medical School"; and 12 letters, 1862- 1867, to C. Bruce Walker, Librarian, requesting him to allow various people to use the library.
